What’s been happening in the Church this week?

Progress report – 3rd February 2023

The little dumper truck needs some explanation. You may see it trundling down London Road or returning empty via Cross Street and Rose Street, from which you can cross straight back into the west entrance.

Borras are moving some of the soil that has come out of the trenches for pipes and drains to the far South East corner of the churchyard.  We can then use it in our own time to level up the well-used paths, which have been steadily getting deeper in the eastern half of the churchyard.  The very rough pile that is currently collecting by the pill box will, we are assured, be sorted (stone, tarmac and brick to be removed) and the area tidied up before the job can be considered finished.

Meanwhile in the church there is still more stone to be laid.  If you walk past the church on Monday to Wednesday evenings, you will usually see the lights on.  This is not carelessness but working late by our contractors who come from the same part of the country as the stone:  this is Ancaster in Lincolnshire and rather too far for a daily commute.

Preparations are now beginning for the work on the north door. The steel beams that will be the support while the entrance way is cut can be seen in the RH picture stacked against the west wall (left hand side of picture).

We are still fund raising  –  even if you have given already, please go to the website and donate today.

Although the building itself is closed, worship continues in The Cornerstone on Sundays (8, 9.30 and 11.15am) and on weekdays (Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 am and Thursday at 9 am) and the bell ringers have access to the tower.  There is still access to almost all the churchyard either through the lychgate in London Road or the double gate in Norreys Avenue. The memorials by The Cornerstone and by the vestry door can be accessed by arrangement with the Parish office.
