What’s been happening in the Church this week?

Progress report  – 17th November  2022

The screed is now complete.  It was not an entirely straightforward job.  The memorial stones to be re-laid in the church as well as all being different sizes are also different thicknesses.  Although the mortar they are laid on can provide some tolerance not all the spaces into which they will be put can be the same depth. The screed layers therefore had to follow an intricate plan with all the dimensions to ensure that when the stones are placed in their final positions the floor will be entirely level.

Meantime, outside the church, groundwork continues in what has been the most awful weather.  The archaeologist will be on hand when the trench digging takes in the churchyard. We know the trenches will have to run close to ancient memorials, but not until the digging actually starts will we know what is underground.  At this stage of the project we hope it is not too interesting!

A provisional date for your diary.  We are hoping to hold another open day.  This will be on  Saturday 10th December – a chance to see the floor for yourself, with at least some of the stone already laid.  That job is due to start on a couple of weeks.

We have a stall at the Winter Carnival on Sunday 27th November: a game for children, sweets to give out, flower arrangements and pictures to sell. Most important oif all to tell people about the project.  Please come and visit us, or even better, offer to help (email Hannah@allsaintswokingham.org.uk).

Thank you to all of you who are continuing to give to the appeal.  During September and October we raised £12,173.  To reach our £120,000 target before the work is finished, we need more than £10,000 a month.

Please continue to pray about what you might give yourself and that all may give generously. The website has all the details.  Think how you can be creative and get sponsored or donate to buy a chair in memory of someone or donate to our organ or main appeals.

Although the building itself is closed, worship continues in The Cornerstone on Sundays (8, 9.30 and 11.15am) and on weekdays (Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 am and Thursday at 9 am) and the bell ringers will have access to the tower again.  There is still access to almost all the churchyard either through the lychgate in London Road or the double gate in Norreys Avenue. The memorials by The Cornerstone and by the vestry door can be accessed by arrangement with the Parish office.
