Progress report – 21st April 2023
Now that the temporary works for the new doorway have been removed you can see how the arches (square at the top and gothic for the door itself) have been designed to mirror the existing building.
One of the good news pieces from the progress meeting held with contractors and architects this week is that the door delivery is now confirmed – and for an earlier date than expected.
All the mundane things that will make the building work are now being installed – worktops in the servery and utility area, toilets and basins in the cubicles and
But there is still more restoration going on. Sally continues her painstaking work – this time on the Bishop Godwyn floor memorial which was in a terrible state in the vestry. We were quite careful about the wall memorial but most of us did not realise the floor memorial was below. It was not so fortunate. That radiator was probably installed 100 years ago. Both wall and floor memorial will now be in the north aisle visible to all.
We are very grateful to the donors of gifts of £5000 each to the project during April, but we still need another £40,000 to reach our target of £120,000. There is still the option to donate a chair with a dedication or to contribute to the organ or main appeal. You will find all the details on the website.
Although the building itself is closed, worship continues in The Cornerstone on Sundays (8, 9.30 and 11.15am) and on weekdays (Tuesday and Wednesday at 10 am and Thursday at 9 am) and the bell ringers have access to the tower. There is still access to almost all the churchyard either through the lychgate in London Road or the double gate in Norreys Avenue. The memorials by The Cornerstone and by the vestry door can be accessed by arrangement with the Parish office.
