This weekend sees the season of Advent begin. It is the start of a new year in the church’s annual cycle of celebration. Advent is a time of preparation before Christmas like Lent is a time of preparation before Easter.
The preparations that tend to dominate our lives during Advent are very much focused on the practical and material side of Christmas. Yet Advent is also a time of spiritual reflection preparing ourselves inwardly to welcome Christ into our hearts and lives.
To help us with this, as well as the readings and prayers in our usual Sunday and midweek services, there are some special services and events.
This Sunday we have an Advent Reflective Service 6.30pm in The Cornerstone.
Starting on Thursday 1st December, followed on 8th and 15th December there is our Advent course – “Journeying with the Magi” – an exploration of Advent in prayer and meditation at 9.40am, (after Morning Prayer at 9am) in the De Vitre Room The Cornerstone.
The book for Advent we are studying this year is Sleepers Wake : Getting Serious about Climate Change by Nicholas Holtam. If you didn’t manage to order it yet, get it from Quench Bookshop at Holme Grange Craft Village near Wokingham or order it online with free delivery from hive.co.uk
There will be a discussion evening about the book Sleepers Wake on Tuesday 20th December at 7.30pm in The Cornerstone.
