The Big One – it’s not too late

This day next week on Friday 21st April there will be a group of people from All Saints Church, – myself and Lorraine included  -together with The Reverend Hannah Higginson – joining the massive rally in London which will converge on Parliament to call for more action on climate change and the environment. This is being called The Big One. Tens of thousands of people of all faiths and not of faith will be gathering in a public witness for climate action.

The day on Friday will start with a service “No Faith in Fossil Fuels” at St John’s Church Waterloo. (Gather from 11am for 12 noon outdoor service). This will be followed by a walk of pilgrimage from about 1pm to the rally outside Parliament.

Olivia, Bishop of Reading is supporting the event as are many charities such as Christian Aid and the Green Christian network

Not Too Late

This is the title of an inspiring new book and website:  Not Too Late: changing the climate story from despair to possibility. #NotTooLate is for anyone who is despondent, anxious, or unsure about climate change and seeking answers. The various contributors make clear, the future will be decided by whether we act in the present—and we must act to counter institutional inertia, fossil fuel interests, and political obduracy. The editors write:

“We know that there are still important choices to make about climate, and we don’t have to wait hoping for national politicians to act. We know individual actions matter, but in order to have effective change it will take mass action from people everywhere. We know the difference between the best and worst case scenarios matters. We know that the future is being decided in the present. We know that a lot of people are overwhelmed by doom and gloom. It is not too late. At the same time, we are not here to avoid the worst news. We are here to fortify people to face it and to try to change it. ”

“Hope is not the conviction that something will turn out well, but the certainty that something is worth doing no matter how it turns out.” — Václav Havel

“Avoiding climate breakdown will require cathedral thinking. We must lay the foundation while we may not know exactly how to build the ceiling”. –Greta Thunberg
